Add extra lines to your office phone system or home office.  SIP trunks are a low cost option for small businesses needing to add a few lines for increased outgoing call capacity but wishing to avoid the extra connection and rental charges of standard business telephone lines.

• Low or no connection charges

• Reduced or no monthly rental

• Low call charges and free calls between other sites with SIP trunks

Telephone numbers from most UK areas are available which is ideal if you need a local presence in another area, additionally some providers are able to port existing phone numbers in from BT which allows you to keep your phone number even if your business is moving away from your local telephone exchange area.

On a more negative note – sometimes call quality will not be as good as on digital ISDN lines and there may be more periods of telephone downtime that we are all used to with the reliability of ISDN digital connections.  If your data network is out of service (such as your ADSL broadband) you will not be able to make/receive calls using SIP trunks.

ToneTel telecom continue to trial and use SIP trunking services so we can monitor improvements but we have yet to see one which is up to the standard and reliability of ISDN digital phone lines

VoIP can be used for simple or advanced networking of telephone calls between offices, this can be as simple as free calls using short-dials between a few sites using a couple of dedicated VoIP trunks or linking a larger number of sites as one single phone system with free internal calls across them all.

There are a number of applications for home workers and branch offices becoming part of a main office phone system and using VoIP is an option.

As an example a home based worker with broadband internet could answer and make calls in a similar way to being in the office including taking incoming customer calls and placing calls or using features of the phone system.

Voice over IP and IP telephony receives its fair share of criticism, some of it well deserved as IP telephony roll-outs on networks not ready for the extra load result in very poor quality telephone calls – for example a small business with a basic ADSL broadband internet service that is being heavily used for data applications such as file uploads/downloads, email, and web use etc is going experience some voice quality problems and/or poor internet service if multiple telephone calls are introduced onto that limited bandwidth as well.

However there are broadband services and routing equipment especially designed to support voice over ip services which can assign quality of service (QoS) to the phone calls to make sure that the available bandwidth is dedicated when needed.
