ISDN Connections
- NEC
XN120
Trade Tips from ToneTel Telecom
ISDN2e BRI cards for the XN120 are
available as a 2-Line (4ch) card or a 4-Line (8ch) version, don't forget
when ordering ISDN cards that an OPBox (NEC Part ID: IP2WW-2OPBOX)
is needed to fit them on the XN120 cabinet.
A maximum of eight ISDN2e BRI lines
(16 channels) can be connected to a single XN120 cabinet (with OPBox),
but this figure is reduced if you have VoIP cards installed as
well. Additional ISDN lines can be connected with expansion
cabinets (+ OPBoxes).

Card - NEC
XN120
Trade Tips from ToneTel Telecom
The EXIFU Applications card (NEC
Part ID: IP2WW-EXIFU-A1
) is highly recommended by us to be installed in all XN120 systems.
What
does it do
? - The Application card provides an Ethernet port which is
used for engineer programming (PC access), local network administration
& SIP registration for VoIP solutions. Additionally remote
access programming via WAN (ADSL broadband) etc is possible.
The
Application card additionally provides a Serial COM Port for call
logging or programming (call logging is possible via Ethernet or
Serial), if you are expanding the XN120 to additional cabinets the
Applications card is required for Expansion cabinet connection.
System
Firmware upgrades are also only possible through the flash card slot of
the Applications card.
ToneTel
Telecom engineers have spare Applications cards so if you are not going
to equip a system with one, let us know and we will fit one temporarily
so we can ensure the latest firmware is loaded and the system is
correctly programmed and a backup taken.

us to check or test compatibility.
Please note: When SLTs are

Hotel
Application
- NEC
XN120
Trade Tips from ToneTel Telecom
The Hotel Application is now free
for the XN120 which provides some useful features for the small hotel
including check-in, check-out, call barring, single digit calling from
guest rooms, room telephone status (via DSS console or printer/PC),
Wake-up calls, Message Waiting, Do not Disturb & call logging.
Though the MyCalls Manager software
package is able to run reports on rooms for billing purposes, it is not
specifically designed for hotels and thus needs a lot of data entry time
to add call-costings etc (which are limited in billing flexibility
compared to many other packages), therefore we recommend a 3rd party
software program for call logging/costings or a specific hotel logging
software program.
ToneTel Telecom have successfully
tested & implemented the Hotel application so please speak to us if
you need to run through your clients needs.

My
Calls - NEC
XN120
Trade Tips from ToneTel Telecom
'My Calls' is a software package
for the XN120 which is available in 2 varieties:
MyCalls Basic - Free for a year and
then annual renewable licence key, the package provides SMDR call
logging record along with basic reports and real-time graphical
summaries of total incoming calls, abandoned calls etc.
MyCalls Manager - The upgrade
requires a one-off license key purchase and provides additional options
include call costings, additional reports, no 24-extension limit,
additional alarm monitoring and more graphical summary options.
My Calls does take a bit of time to
install and setup and is not as user friendly as some packages (extra
training) so do cost in this time if arranging a quotation for a
customer, the My Calls Manager upgrade can need a lot of data entry time
so bear this in mind when comparing the lower cost of My Calls against
other 3rd party software packages.
My Calls has minimum software &
hardware requirements for installation and support may be needed from
the clients IT department or supplier. Please contact us for more
information.

BT
Linecords for NEC Phones - NEC
XN120
Trade Tips from ToneTel Telecom
The NEC 'Vision' & 'Talk' system
featurephones are supplied with an RJ11 linecord which means if required
they can be plugged straight into the extension ports of the CCU.
Whilst you can connect RJ11 linecords
to RJ45 (Cat-5 structured cabling) sockets, we do not recommend it as it
can cause damage to the internal pins of the socket which can lead to
connection problems and disconnections. We recommend BT linecords
and standard structured cabling RJ45 adapters/mod-taps.
ToneTel Telecom recommend that
standard BT cw1308 telephone wiring is used for telephone block-wiring
installations rather than RJ11 linejacks so the ports remain fully hybrid
(standard telephone or NEC featurephone).
All good XN120 distributors stock BT
linecords for the phones and these should be ordered with the phones for
all installations, ToneTel Telecom normally hold stocks of these so if you
forget, let us know and we can supply and add them to your invoice.

System
Cabling Matters - NEC
XN120
Trade Tips from ToneTel Telecom
The XN120 presents its trunk line and
extension ports on RJ11 outlets, the system is supplied with a pre-formed
multipair cable with RJ11 tails one end and bare wires the other so the
ports can be correctly terminated in a new or existing TJF.
We recommend that for every 308 or
008 card that two 237 Krone strips are used inside a box-connection so
don't forget to consider this when surveying an installation or purchasing
equipment.
Please contact us if you need help
with planning the connection box size and wiring.

Planning
Configuration - NEC
XN120
Trade Tips from ToneTel Telecom
The XN120 is both a very advanced
phone system and very flexible, it can operate as simple or as advanced as
needed to meet customer requirements and the flexibility in system
numbering means that extension, features and voicemail codes can be
changed to match those of an existing telephone system that is being
replaced - making the changeover process much easier from the user
perspective.
ToneTel Telecom offer a number of
basic configuration worksheets on our documents
page to ensure that our customers can send us site requirements and can
offer guidance on matching existing site number plans etc.
Remember that one of the most
important things about any telephone system installation is the planning
with the customer in terms of how they want the system to operate and
which features they require - this should be documented in a configuration
plan before the installation rather than leaving things to the last minute
to ensure the smoothest of installations.

Wiring
Polarities - NEC
XN120
Trade Tips from ToneTel Telecom
NEC 'Vision' & 'Talk'
featurephones require 2-pair, standard analogue telephones require of
course only 1-pair - unlike many other systems there is no problem with
providing the 'data pair' from an extension port to a standard telephone,
they simply will not be utilised.
Mark 1 telephones are polarity
conscious so bear this in mind if you trouble initialising telephones or
if the display brings up a time/date marker or counter but does not go any
further. Mark 2 telephones are not polarity conscious.
We have received many confused calls
from our trade customers regular cabling installers when testing an cable
installation with an 'out of the box' XN120 especially where the display
telephones supplied have been Mark 2 and the non display telephones have
been Mark 1 - very simply the Mark 2 is not polarity conscious whilst the
Mark 1 is.
We are of course here to help if your
regular cabling installer get stuck and we of course can also provide
cabling installations ourselves if you would prefer to leave it for us to
complete the whole job.

Adding
a Mobile GSM Gateway - NEC
XN120
Trade Tips from ToneTel Telecom
A GSM Mobile Gateway (Premicell) can
be connected to an XN120 system utilising analogue trunk or ISDN2e ports
(dependant on the Gateway requirements).
The XN120's advanced routing tables
allow all required calls (normally 07) to be routed automatically to the
GSM Gateway and can also provide restrictions or rerouting if required.
ToneTel Telecom can offer guidance on
the purchase of GSM Gateway units and have plenty of connection
experience, let us know if you are planning a GSM Gateway connection and
we can outline the configuration possibilities available including the
replacement of the standard line keys to stop users overriding the routing
by pressing a line key from their NEC Featurephone.
